Histories of the National Mall

Project homepage with Maps, Explorations, People, and Past Events

The RRCHNM team included Directors (Sharon Leon and Sheila Brennan), Manager (Lee Ann Ghajar), Web Designer (Kim Nguyen), Programmer (Jim Safley), Content Experts (Spencer Crew, Michael O’Malley, and Zachary Schrag), and Staff Members (Megan Brett, Lindsay Bestebreurtje, and James Halabuck). The project was started on April 2, 2012, and completed March 31, 2015.

Organization

Project content is organized into 4 different categories. Maps offers eight historic map layers, which can be filtered by era and item type. Explorations offer inquiry-based questions on topics of interest. Each exploration has a one-paragraph answer to the questions, and provides five primary sources relevant to the answer. People tells the stories of individuals who were influential in the history of the Mall. Past Events reveals a chronology that occurred in the Mall space. All items in the site are searchable and tagged under one of fourteen broad themes.
