Imaging the French Revolution
Description
Imaging the French Revolution—an experiment in digital scholarship—is organized in three sections. In essays, seven scholars— selected for their previous work on revolutionary images—analyze forty-two images of crowds and crowd violence in the French Revolution, a shared on-line archive that provided the starting point for the project. Offering the most relevant examples and comments from an on-line forum that took place during the summer of 2003, discussion highlights an effort by those same scholars to consider issues of interpretation, methodology, and the impact of digital media on scholarship. In many cases, authors incorporated the fruits of these discussions into their final essays. These instances are marked for readers with the icon labeled “Further Discussion,” which provides a link to some of the original excerpts. Finally, images allows readers to consider the work of the scholars and to draw their own conclusion. Not only are readers given access to the same archive as the scholars—an usual circumstance, particularly for visual studies—but we also provide an “Image Tool” that permits close study and comparison of the forty-two images. Furthermore, each image includes relevant data and is linked to the various places throughout the site (both discussion and essays) where scholars discuss it. For a more detailed explanation of the historiographical and methodological goals of this project, as well as an appraisal of its results, please consult the introductory and concluding essays.

Sea of Liberty
Description
Inspired by the Monticello exhibition, The Boisterous Sea of Liberty, the interactive website Sea of Liberty invites you to: explore documents, letters, artwork, and photographs related to the ideas of liberty, freedom, and self-governance, create digital projects that draw inspiration from the past, and showcase project ideas for others to see and learn from. In addition, educators enjoy access to resources related to teaching with primary sources, teaching historical thinking, and encouraging digital citizenship.
Sea of Liberty is a part of Monticello’s Liberty Today Initiative where teachers are invited to collaborate with colleagues and engage in dialog with scholars on the connections between the ideals of liberty and the requirements for self-government and those ideas and requirements today.

The Popular Romance Project
Description
The Popular Romance Project explores the fascinating, often contradictory origins and influences of popular romance as told in novels, films, comics, advice books, songs, and internet fan fiction, taking a global perspective—while looking back across time as far as the ancient Greeks. The Popular Romance Project includes several ambitious, high-profile, carefully integrated programs: a feature-length documentary, Love Between the Covers, for international television broadcast, focusing on the global community of romance readers, writers, and publishers, an interactive, content-rich website created by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, allowing the website’s users to see romance novels in a broad context across time and place, an academic symposium on the past and future of the romance novel hosted by the Library of Congress Center for the Book

The Firefox Digital Memory Bank: Collecting and Preserving the History of Firefox and Mozilla

<a href="http://mozillamemory.org/">http://mozillamemory.org/</a>
Description
The Center for History and New Media (CHNM) at George Mason University is developing new approaches to online collecting of history with a particular focus on the problem of documenting a historical subject that has few central archives and institutions: open source. With Mozilla’s cooperation, a new Firefox Digital Memory Bank will become a centerpiece of our recently launched Open Source Historical Archive (http://opensourcearchive.org/), CHNM’s larger effort to collect, preserve, and analyze the history of open source as a cultural movement, spanning both free/libre and open source software and broader examples of commons-based peer production like Wikipedia. By using proven online collecting techniques and consolidating scattered materials, we aim to create and preserve a more thorough record of Firefox, Mozilla, and their key role in the open source movement.
